Are 360cams a passing fad or here to stay?

I just wrote about how difficult things can be on Crowdsourcing sites like Kickstarter. Then comes along companies, and ideas, like Jaunt’s and Giroptic’s 360cam – which passed its $150,000 goal in its first day on the site. WOW.

But, the bigger question is… are 360 degree cameras here to stay or can we expect about a 3 to 5 year lifecycle for them?

I’m betting that the novelty of them will wear-off quickly.  Just like a fish-eye lens, there will remain special applications for them, as well as artistic interpretations. The mainstream will bite at first, but I think by 2020, the will be a fad of the past.

That is unless 360 projectors come about. What I mean is a projection system that projects the video all around you. Basically immerses you into the environment. Sure, headsets are around that you put on – but I think they lack the spatial aspect which will be needed if the industry progresses.

Nice little video of Giroptics 360cam: [ut_video_youtube url=”d93Ls7I_StQ”]
